Sonora is the great northwestern desert state, famous for its carne asada culture and its Sea of Cortez beaches. Bahia de Kino and Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) are the weekend escapes, with warm shallow water and desert islands offshore.

Inland, the Pinacate volcanic field is a UNESCO-listed desert of craters, and Alamos is one of Mexico's prettiest colonial towns, tucked in the foothills near the Sinaloa border.
