The State of Mexico wraps around Mexico City on three sides, and it holds one of the country's greatest sites: Teotihuacan, the City of the Gods, sits in this state, not in the capital. Most visitors see it as a day trip from Mexico City without realising they have crossed a state line.
Beyond Teotihuacan: Valle de Bravo's lake and paragliding, the Aztec rock temple of Malinalco, the Nevado de Toluca volcano, and the monarch butterfly sanctuaries on the Michoacan border.
