Beyond the highlights
The pages most visitors miss: small cities, regional dishes, festivals and obsessions from the full guide.

Dolmades
Dolmades (dolmadakia) are vine leaves rolled around rice: the classic Greek meze.

Loukoumades
Loukoumades are the Greek honey puffs: spoonfuls of yeasted dough dropped into hot oil, fried golden, then drenched in honey and scattered with cinnamon and crushed walnuts.

Nafplio
Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece (1828-1833): a Venetian and neoclassical town on the Argolic Gulf, under the great Palamidi fortress.

Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is Greece's second city: 2,300 years old, founded in 315 BC and named for Alexander the Great's sister.

Patras Carnival
The Patras Carnival (Patrino Karnavali) is the largest carnival in Greece and one of the largest in Europe, running for more than 180 years.

Monasteries
Orthodox monasticism shaped Greece's mountains: the hanging monasteries of Meteora, the autonomous republic of Mount Athos (men only, by permit), and the great Byzantine foundations like Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni.
