Mexico City is one of the world's great capitals: 2,240 metres up, layered with Aztec, colonial and modern history, and home to arguably the best street food on the planet. It rewards travellers who plan by neighbourhood, because the distances are real.
The Centro Historico holds the Zocalo, the cathedral and the Templo Mayor ruins. Chapultepec park anchors the great museums. Roma and Condesa are the restaurant and nightlife quarters, Coyoacan is the village-like south with Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul, and Xochimilco's canals carry the trajineras.
