Capital: Victoria de Durango

Durango is the land of cinema: dozens of Hollywood westerns were filmed on its desert sets, and the old Villa del Oeste sets still stand outside the capital. The city of Durango itself is a handsome colonial capital with one of Mexico's finest cathedrals.

The Sierra Madre Occidental rises west of the city toward Mazatlan, on the spectacular winding highway known as the Devil's Backbone.
