Oaxaca Travel Guide

Oaxaca is the state travellers fall hardest for. The capital is a UNESCO-listed colonial city of green-stone churches and a food scene many call the best in Mexico. Around it lie the great Zapotec capital of Monte Alban, the stone mosaics of Mitla, the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua, and craft villages for weaving, pottery and mezcal.
The Pacific coast is a different world: Puerto Escondido's surf, the low-key beaches of Mazunte and Zipolite, and the turtle releases at La Escobilla. July brings the Guelaguetza, the indigenous dance festival that is one of Mexico's great cultural events.
