Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece (1828-1833): a Venetian and neoclassical town on the Argolic Gulf, under the great Palamidi fortress. The old town's lanes, the Syntagma Square, the Bourtzi islet fortress in the harbor.
It is the base for the Argolid's classical sites: Mycenae and Epidaurus are both easy day trips. The climb to Palamidi is 999 steps; the view repays every one.
