Currency and cards

The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted widely in cities, hotels and restaurants; contactless is standard. Small tavernas, kiosks and some island businesses are still cash-first: carry euros on small islands.

ATMs are plentiful in towns; on remote islands, withdraw before you go. Avoid the airport and tourist-area exchange booths' poor rates.

Prices

Greece is mid-priced for Europe: cheaper than Italy or France, pricier than the Balkans. Santorini and Mykonos in August are the exception: among the priciest places in the Mediterranean.

Museum and site tickets are set nationally; many offer reduced or free entry on the first Sunday of the month from November to March. A combined ticket covers the Acropolis plus several nearby sites: check the culture ministry site for current prices.
