Epirus is Greece's mountainous northwest: the Pindus range, stone villages and some of the deepest gorges in Europe. The Zagori, a cluster of 46 stone villages, is the heart of it, with Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world relative to its width, at its center.
Ioannina, the capital, sits on Lake Pamvotida with a walled castle and the island of Ali Pasha. Dodona, the second oracle of the ancient world after Delphi, lies south. The Acheron river, the mythical river to the underworld, is now a gorge for rafting; Parga is the coast's resort town.
