Horiatiki, the 'village salad', is the Greek salad: tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, Kalamata olives and a slab of feta, dressed with oregano and olive oil. There is no lettuce in it, ever.
It is eaten in summer, when the tomatoes are real, with bread for mopping the juices. The feta sits on top in a slab, not crumbled: you break it yourself. Order it everywhere from June to September; outside tomato season, it is a shadow of itself.
Key ingredients
Where to try it
- Every taverna in Greece, all summer.
- Island tavernas, where the tomatoes and oil are the point.
- With bread, always: the juices are half the dish.
