Hotels
Athens and Thessaloniki have the full range, from the Grande Bretagne down to design hostels. On the islands, the famous addresses are the caldera-view cave suites of Santorini and the old-town boutique hotels of Rhodes, Chania and Corfu.
Book Santorini, Mykonos and the popular Cyclades months ahead for July and August. Prices drop sharply in May, June, September and October, and the experience is better.
Alternatives
Rooms to let (domatia) are the classic Greek accommodation: family-run rooms, often with a sea view and a fraction of hotel prices, especially on smaller islands. Look for the 'rooms' signs in port towns.
Agritourism guesthouses are strong in the Zagori, Pelion and Crete's mountains. Monastery guesthouses exist at Meteora for the devout and the curious.
