Thessaloniki is Greece's second city: 2,300 years old, founded in 315 BC and named for Alexander the Great's sister. The White Tower stands on the waterfront; above it climbs Ano Poli, the old town that survived the 1917 fire.
This is the food city of Greece: bougatsa for breakfast, trigona pastries, the Ladadika tavernas at night. The waterfront promenade runs for kilometers along the Thermaic Gulf.
