Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is Greece's northeast corner, between the Aegean and the Turkish border. Kavala, the region's jewel, climbs a headland with a 16th-century aqueduct, a Byzantine castle and the old town of Panagia.
Nearby Philippi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2016): the Roman city where St. Paul first preached in Europe. Further east: Xanthi's old town, Alexandroupoli, the bird-rich Evros Delta, and Samothrace, the island of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods where the Winged Victory was found in 1863.
