West Virginia is the mountain state that finally got its national park: New River Gorge (2021), with the 924 m single-arch bridge, world-class whitewater, and the Endless Wall's cliff views. The 'almost heaven' lyric is on the license plates.

Beyond the gorge: the Greenbrier resort's Cold War bunker tours, Harpers Ferry's history at the rivers' confluence, and the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trails.
