California is the most visited US state for good reason: it packs the country's greatest hits into one place. The Golden Gate Bridge and cable cars of San Francisco, the studios and beaches of Los Angeles, the granite walls of Yosemite, the giant sequoias, the deserts of Death Valley and Joshua Tree, and the vineyard valleys of Napa and Sonoma.

The coast runs from the redwood forests of the north to the surf towns of the south, stitched together by Highway 1, one of the world's great drives. Inland, the Sierra Nevada holds Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, while the far south turns to desert around Palm Springs.
