Xanthi's old town preserves the mansions of its tobacco merchants, a 19th-century boomtown ensemble of neoclassical and Ottoman styles. The town is famous for its carnival, one of the biggest in northern Greece, and its Saturday bazaar. It sits at the edge of the Rhodope mountains, on the road between Kavala and Komotini.
