Alexandroupoli is the main port of Thrace, marked by its 19th-century lighthouse on the waterfront promenade. Ferries run from here to Samothrace, the island of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods. The Evros Delta, one of Europe's most important wetlands, lies just to the east.
