Komotini is the capital of the Thrace region and a university town with a large Muslim minority, giving it a distinctly multicultural character. Its old center holds Ottoman mosques, a covered bazaar and the Byzantine walls. It is more a working regional capital than a tourist town, but the food scene reflects its mixed heritage.
