Preveza guards the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, with a long seafront promenade and a relaxed small-town feel. Just north lie the ruins of ancient Nicopolis, the city Augustus founded after the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The town is also the mainland base for the beaches of the Parga coast.
