Newfoundland is the eastern edge of North America: 500-year-old fishing culture, Irish and English roots, and a landscape of barrens, fjords and sea cliffs. St. John's, the oldest English-founded city in North America, climbs the hill under Signal Hill in rows of bright 'jellybean' houses.
The west coast holds Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO site of fjords and tablelands. L'Anse aux Meadows, at the island's northern tip, is the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America. Each spring and summer, Iceberg Alley off the east coast drifts with 10,000-year-old ice.
