The largest city in western Newfoundland, on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River. It grew around the pulp and paper mill built in the 1920s, still a landmark employer and surveyed in Captain Cook's early mapping days. It is the service hub for the west coast and the launch point for Gros Morne National Park to the north.
