Symi's harbor is one of the most beautiful in the Aegean: neoclassical mansions in ochre and terracotta rising steeply from the water. The island was the sponge-diving capital of the Dodecanese, a trade remembered in its naval museum. The monastery of Panormitis on the south coast is the island's great pilgrimage site.
