Naxos Town, the Chora of Naxos, is guarded by the Portara, the giant marble gate of an unfinished 6th-century BC temple to Apollo. Behind the waterfront, the Venetian castle quarter of Bourgos climbs the hill in a maze of lanes. It is the main port of the Cyclades' largest island.
