Patras is Greece's third city and its western gateway, with ferries to Italy leaving from its port. It hosts the country's biggest carnival, a weeks-long February festival of floats and parties. The Rio-Antirrio Bridge, one of the world's longest cable-stayed bridges, spans the gulf just east of the city.
