Messolonghi is the sacred city of the Greek War of Independence: the 1826 siege and the Exodus of its defenders are commemorated every Palm Sunday, and Lord Byron died here in 1824. It sits on a vast shallow lagoon famous for its fish, its avgotaraho (bottarga) and its pelicans. The Garden of Heroes holds the tombs of the fallen.
