Marathon is the town of the 490 BC battle where the Athenians defeated the Persians, the origin of the marathon race. The burial mound of the 192 Athenian dead still rises over the plain, and the town hosts the start of the authentic Athens Marathon each November. Nearby Lake Marathon is ringed by pine forest and walking paths.
