The Virtual Working Programme is Dubai's one-year, renewable residence visa for people whose income comes from outside the UAE.
The Golden Visa is the UAE's 10-year, self-sponsored residence permit: no employer, no local sponsor, no minimum stay requirement (the usual six-month absence rule is waived).
No income test for this route: it is capital-based, not income-based.

Ocean transit to Jebel Ali port runs 20-28 days from the US East Coast and 18-25 days from the West Coast; door-to-door timelines including packing, ocean transit, customs clearance, and final delivery run 8 to 14 weeks. Alcohol is strictly prohibited in household-goods shipments: no declaration process and no duty workaround exists.
12-16 weeks out
choose a licensed international mover, get quotes, and start the visa process (customs will not release your shipment without residency status in motion).
8 weeks out
your residence visa should be in process; confirm with your mover.
At packing
keep alcohol, prohibited items, and anything requiring approval out of the shipment; produce the detailed inventory with the mover.
Arrival
container lands at Jebel Ali; clearance and delivery typically add 1-2 weeks after the ship berths.
After arrival
register your Ejari tenancy (needed for DEWA utilities and sometimes customs paperwork), complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics, and activate health insurance.

Apply online through the ICP Smart Services portal or app after your residence visa is issued, pay the fee (USD 27 per year of validity plus USD 11-19 service fee), book a biometrics appointment for fingerprints, photo, and iris scan, then receive the card by courier in 5-7 working days. The digital ID in the UAEICP app works for most uses (banks, telecom) while the card prints. For a 1-year virtual work visa, the ID costs roughly USD 46-54; for a 10-year Golden Visa, around USD 290.
Not an annual lease. A standard yearly tenancy requires a registered Ejari contract, which needs an Emirates ID and a local bank account. Without residency, use the regulated short-term market: licensed holiday homes, serviced apartments, or Airbnb-style monthly rentals, which only need a passport copy and include utilities plus a tourism fee.
You need a valid residence visa and genuine presence. The three tests are: 183+ days of physical presence in a 12-month period (no other conditions), 90+ days if you are a resident with a permanent home or job/business in the UAE, or centre of vital interests. Apply online through the FTA's EmaraTax portal with your passport, Emirates ID, entry/exit report, and Ejari or title deed; approval typically takes 4-5 business days. Note a treaty certificate (for claiming double-tax-treaty relief) generally needs the 183-day test; a Golden Visa alone does not make you tax resident.
Yes. Popular Outstanding-rated schools, especially JESS (both campuses), run historically strong waitlists and early registration is essential. Download each school's KHDA School Fees Fact Sheet before applying: it lists tuition, registration, exam, transport, and conditional charges so you can compare the true annual total, not just the tuition line.
On personal income, yes: the UAE has 0% personal income tax, no tax on rental income or capital gains for individuals, and the government has repeatedly confirmed personal income tax is not under consideration. Businesses face 9% corporate tax on profits above USD 102,000 (free-zone qualifying income can stay at 0%), and freelancers only register once turnover passes USD 272,000 a year. US citizens and green card holders still owe the IRS on worldwide income regardless of UAE residency.
Yes. GDRFA confirms virtual work visa holders may sponsor a spouse and children for the same residency duration. Dependents need valid UAE health insurance and additional documentation.
Register your tenancy through Ejari first: the Ejari certificate is mandatory to activate DEWA (electricity and water). Your housing fee (5% of annual rent) is billed through the DEWA bill automatically. Internet comes separately from du or Etisalat, with plans starting from USD 62/month.
You cannot ship alcohol in your household goods at all: it is prohibited in sea and air freight. Personally, travellers 18+ may bring up to 4 litres of alcohol or 2 cartons of beer (24 cans each, 355ml max) duty-free through the airport. Inside Dubai, licensed retailers and licensed venues sell alcohol to residents 21+.
