Pella was the ancient capital of the Macedonian kingdom and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The archaeological site preserves the grid-planned city and its famous pebble mosaics, displayed alongside finds in the excellent on-site museum. It sits on the plain about 40 km west of Thessaloniki.
