Kozani is the capital of Western Macedonia and the center of Greece's saffron country: the red crocus of Krokos Kozanis is a protected designation of origin product grown in the surrounding villages. The town has a lively carnival tradition and a central square ringed by cafes. It sits on the Egnatia Odos motorway, about 130 km west of Thessaloniki.
