Sparta is the modern town built in 1834 near the site of ancient Sparta, its streets laid out in a neat grid at the foot of Mount Taygetus. The ancient acropolis and theater survive as ruins on the town's edge. Most visitors come for Mystras, the Byzantine ghost city 6 km away, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
