Gytheio is the port of the Mani, a working fishing town with a neoclassical waterfront facing the islet of Cranae, mythical landing place of Paris and Helen. Ferries leave here for Kythera. The town's lighthouse and the small ancient theater are the landmarks, and the beaches of Mavrovouni lie just south.
