Chalkida is the capital of Evia, built on both sides of the Euripus Strait where the tidal currents famously reverse direction several times a day. The old bridge over the strait is the town's landmark, and the waterfront promenade is lined with ouzeries. The medieval Karababa fortress stands on the Boeotian side.
