Mardin is the honey-stone old town cascading down a ridge above the Mesopotamian plain, a layered city of Syriac churches, mosques and madrasas. The Deyrulzafaran Monastery and the Kasımiye Madrasa are the great set pieces; sunset over the plain is the ritual.
