Cash and cards

Cash is king in medinas, souks, taxis and small restaurants. ATMs are widespread in cities (Attijariwafa, BMCE and Société Générale machines are reliable); withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees.

Cards are accepted in hotels, malls and better restaurants. Some ATMs and shops add a surcharge for foreign cards.

Prices

Morocco is affordable: a good restaurant meal runs 80 to 200 dirhams, a petit taxi across town 20 to 40, a riad from 400 to several thousand.

Tourist prices in Marrakech and Fès medinas run higher than elsewhere; the south and east are cheaper.

Exchange

Exchange at airport bureaus or banks; hotel rates are worse. Keep the exchange receipt: you need it to convert leftover dirhams back at departure.

Euros are the easiest foreign currency to exchange; dollars are fine too.
