Entry and documents

Most visitors (EU, UK, US, Canada and many others) get 90 days visa-free on arrival; the passport must be valid for the stay. You will fill in an entry card on the plane.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Keep a copy of your passport separate from the original.

When to go

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the sweet spots: warm days, cool nights, green Atlas valleys.

Summer is for the coast (Essaouira, Agadir, Tangier) and brutal inland: Marrakech and Fès regularly pass 40°C in July and August. Winter brings snow to the Atlas (skiing at Oukaïmeden and Ifrane) and mild days in the south.

Ramadan moves each year; during it, many restaurants close by day and the nights come alive. The Fes sacred music festival (June) and the Gnaoua festival (June) are worth planning around.

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots, with warm days, cool nights and green Atlas valleys. Summer is for the coast only, since Marrakech and Fes regularly pass 40C, and winter brings Atlas snow plus mild days in the south.

What to pack

Layers: desert nights are cold even when days are hot, and the Atlas is cold year-round at altitude.

Modest dress earns respect outside the beach resorts: cover shoulders and knees in medinas and villages. A scarf is useful for mosque visits (exteriors) and desert wind.

Good walking shoes: the medinas are cobbled and hilly. Sunscreen, a hat and a reusable water bottle.
