Greetings and hospitality

Greet with salaam alaykum; handshakes are standard between men. Many Moroccan women do not shake hands with men: wait for the cue.

Accept mint tea when offered. It is the opening of the conversation, not just a drink.

Dress and behavior

Dress modestly outside beach resorts: cover shoulders and knees in medinas, villages and religious sites.

Ask before photographing people, especially in rural areas. Do not photograph military or police installations.

Non-Muslims cannot enter mosques in Morocco, with the single exception of guided tours of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.

Bargaining and tipping

Bargaining is expected in souks and with unmetered taxis, but not in restaurants or fixed-price shops. Start at about a third of the asking price and meet in the middle, with good humor.

Tip 10 percent in restaurants if service is not included; round up for taxis; small tips for guides and hammam attendants.
