Zakynthos Town was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in its old Venetian style, around Solomos Square named for the poet of the Greek national anthem. The Byzantine museum and the hilltop Venetian castle are the landmarks. It is the island's ferry port, with the famous Navagio beach a drive away on the west coast.
