Agios Nikolaos is the resort capital of eastern Crete, built around the deep, circular Lake Voulismeni joined to the sea. It is the base for boat trips to Spinalonga, the former leper colony island. The town's waterfront of cafes and boutiques faces the Mirabello Gulf.
