Yukon's capital on the Yukon River, named for the Whitehorse Rapids whose foam was said to resemble horses' manes. It grew as a Klondike Gold Rush supply hub and later an Alaska Highway construction base, becoming the territorial capital in 1953. The S.S. Klondike, the largest sternwheeler to ply the Yukon River, sits beached on the riverfront as a National Historic Site.
