Quebec City is North America's oldest walled city: 400 years of French history inside the ramparts, with the Château Frontenac watching over it all. The Upper Town holds the Citadelle and the Terrasse Dufferin; the Lower Town's Petit-Champlain is the oldest shopping street on the continent.
Come in winter for the Carnaval and the toboggan slide, in summer for the festivals and the terrasses. The city rewards walkers: every corner turns up another 17th-century stone house.
