Foumban is the seat of the Bamoun kingdom and one of the great cultural destinations in Cameroon. Its Royal Palace was built in 1917 by King Ibrahim Njoya, the inventor of the Bamum script.
The Museum of the Bamoun Kings, opened in April 2024, holds some 12,500 pieces covering the dynasty from 1394 to the present. The town's artisan centre is famous for woodcarving, beadwork and brasswork, and the Nguon royal festival (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, 2023) is held here roughly every two years.
