Vietnam's national park system covers 34 parks, from the limestone karsts of the northern frontier to the mangroves of the Mekong Delta. Cuc Phuong, founded in 1962, was the first; Song Thanh, established in 2020, is the newest.
A handful are essential stops: Phong Nha-Ke Bang for the world's great caves, Cuc Phuong for ancient forest and primates, Cat Tien for gibbons and birding, Con Dao for reefs and turtles. The rest reward the traveller who goes looking.
