Currency and cards

The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). Credit and debit cards are accepted widely in cities, hotels and restaurants; contactless is standard.

Cash is still king in bazaars, small towns, dolmuşes and street food. ATMs are plentiful; avoid the airport exchanges' poor rates.

Prices and tipping

Turkey is good value by European standards: street food and lokantas are cheap, mid-range restaurants moderate, and the grand hotels priced like their peers elsewhere.

Tip about 10 percent in restaurants, round up in cafés, and a few lira for hotel staff. Museum and site entry fees add up on a ruins-heavy trip: budget for them.
