Veracruz

Mexico's historic Gulf port, where Hernán Cortés landed in 1519 and where the San Juan de Ulúa fortress still guards the harbor. The malecon and the zocalo's cafes keep a lively, musical atmosphere, with danzón danced in the plaza on weekends. It is the country's oldest Spanish settlement.
