Spanakopita is the spinach and feta pie in phyllo pastry: the great Greek savory pie. Chopped spinach (or wild greens) is mixed with feta, dill and egg, wrapped in buttered phyllo and baked until the layers shatter.

It is eaten as a snack, a breakfast, a picnic pie or a light meal, sold in bakeries in big slabs or as individual triangles (spanakopitakia). Epirus, the pie region, makes dozens of variants with different greens.

Key ingredients

  • Spinach or wild greens, chopped
  • Feta cheese, dill, egg
  • Phyllo pastry, brushed with olive oil or butter

Where to try it

  • Bakeries (fournoi) everywhere: the morning spanakopita is a Greek institution.
  • Epirus tavernas for the regional variants with wild greens.
  • As spanakopitakia (small triangles) on meze platters.
