All-inclusives
Punta Cana, Montego Bay and Varadero run on all-inclusives: the big resorts (Hyatt Ziva, Tortuga Bay, Half Moon) bundle food, drink and activities. They are the easiest and often the cheapest way to do the beach, especially for families.
Read the fine print: premium restaurants, top-shelf spirits and off-site excursions usually cost extra. Adults-only sections are standard at the larger resorts.
Boutique hotels and guesthouses
Old San Juan (El Convento), Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone (Casas del XVI, Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando) and Barbados' west coast do boutique well. Jamaica's Portland parish and Treasure Beach run on guesthouses and villas.
In Cuba, the casa particular (licensed private homestay) is the essential stay: book through the established platforms, expect breakfast included, and some of the best food on the island.
Booking tips
December to April: book 3-6 months ahead for Christmas, New Year and Easter. Hurricane season (June-November): rates drop 30-50 percent and cancellation terms matter more.
In Havana, casas fill fast in January (jazz festival) and around Carnival in Santiago (July). In Barbados, Crop Over (July-August) books out the west coast.
