The Caribbean's wildlife rewards the traveller who looks beyond the beach: thousands of humpback whales calving in Samaná Bay, hawksbill turtles grazing off Barbados, the world's largest flamingo colony in the southern Bahamas, Cuban crocodiles in the Zapata swamp, and two of the world's rarest animals in Jamaica and Puerto Rico.

The rule everywhere: watch with licensed operators, keep your distance, and never touch. The best encounters are the quiet ones.
