The Spanish Caribbean built to last: Santo Domingo (1496), Old San Juan (1521), Havana (1519) and Trinidad (1514) are four of the great colonial cities of the Americas, all UNESCO-listed.

Walk them early morning or late afternoon: the stone holds the day's heat. The fortresses (El Morro, San Cristóbal, the Morro in Havana and Santiago) are the military bookends.
