The Saskatoon berry is the prairie berry: a small purple fruit like a blueberry with an almond note, growing wild across the west. The city of Saskatoon takes its name from the Cree word for it, misâskwatômina.

The pie is the classic preparation: berries baked in a flaky crust, often with a lattice top. On the prairies it is as standard as apple pie.
