Nanaimo bars are named for the Vancouver Island city of Nanaimo, and they are a three-layer no-bake bar: a chocolate-graham crumb base, a custard-flavoured butter icing middle, and a chocolate top.

Recipes circulated in 1950s community cookbooks before the bar took the city's name. Nanaimo now runs a Nanaimo Bar Trail linking cafes serving classic and inventive versions.
